State Grant Opens Doors for CAC’s GED Students

Each year Central Arizona College receives more than $275,000 in both federal and state funds from the Arizona Adult Education Grant to provide GED instruction to residents throughout Pinal County. The dollar amounts awarded through this grant program are based on Census data and an identified need for services.

Central Arizona College invites community members to beat the proverbial heat as the CAC Family Flicks Series meanders throughout the summer by offering a slew of Thursday Classic Movie Matinees across Pinal County.

The series continues Aug. 9 at the college’s Maricopa Center with a feature presentation of The Mark of Zorro.

Workshop approach helps Gilbert charter school succeed

Lexi Tabor, 11, is clerk and founder of her own hair-clip business in one of the classrooms at Edu-Prize Charter School in Gilbert.

Her hair clips come in blue, purple and green and feature tiny decorative flowers.

Some are selling for $2, few smaller clips for $1.

"Business has been really good. So far we've sold about 10 or 11," Lexi said.

Wolverines Represent CUSD in Future Cities Competition

The Wolverines did an outstanding job representing the Coolidge Unified School District #21 on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Regional Future Cities Competition.

Mountain Vista Middle School was one of 30 schools to participate in the competition this year – one of only two schools in Pinal County.

Congratulations to Biviana Rodriquez, Nathan Pugh, McKenzie Banks, Tatyana Williams and Keegin Juden for their hard work and dedication to this endeavor.

Wolverines Mock Trial Victories

On Friday, March 8, 2013, the Wolverines participated in the Pinal County Mock Trial Competition.

The students won their case and Shayla Prince took home Best Closing Argument for the second year in a row and Rachel Jones took home the award for Best Witness.

With changes on the horizon, students encouraged to enroll in CAC GED test-prep courses this fall

With the number of adults without a high school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma reaching new heights, the GED Testing Service plans to roll out a new test in January of 2014.

“The new test will be computer-based, more expensive, and much more difficult and involved,” Ronny Douglass, director of adult basic education at Central Arizona College, explained.

Lockdown in Combs Unified District

At approximately, 1:20 this afternoon, two parents reported to the office staff at Ranch Elementary that they saw young men at the intersection of Kenworthy and Ranch Road and it appeared that they had items that looked like guns. PCSO was immediately called and both Ranch Elementary and Combs High School went into lock down.

Ellsworth Elementary Eagles Take Flight

Principal Tammy Stimatze is very excited about a school wide activity that Ellsworth Elementary in San Tan Valley will be hosting the last Friday of each month.

It is called “Take Flight Friday” and it promotes the pillars of character, building community within the school while incorporating social studies and science state standards.

Walker Butte's Helping Hands Making a Difference

The Helping Hands Club at Walker Butte Leadership School recently partnered with the Colten Cowell Foundation on a coin drive. The club was inspired by a young man by the name of Tyson. Tyson currently has MS, and instead of focusing on his illness, he was compelled to help other children with debilitating illnesses. His goal is to fill 1,000 mason jars with coins to donate to the Colten Cowell Foundation. The coin drive inspired our students to do what they could to help Tyson.
