This year’s countdown to the Aug. 28 Primary Election in Arizona sees the newly created Arizona Legislative District No. 16 field for state legislative seats crowded. This  race for one senatorial seat and two representatives’ seats has numerous Republicans vying for the right to represent their political party in the Nov. 6 general election.

Democrats, emboldened by the recall of Senate President Russell Pearce and flagging public interest in enforcement-focused immigration laws, plan to introduce a bill to repeal Arizona's controversial Senate Bill 1070.

Supporters and opponents of Arizona's controversial immigration law are squaring off again after Democrats said they're working to repeal the measure.

I will be asking my elected colleagues to sign a resolution to hold their employees to the same standards of conduct that the Board holds its staff to.  The resolution is straightforward:  current county employees should resign their position if they intend to run for a paid partisan political office.  Our Board has held this standard for many years and I feel our constituents expect other elected officials to follow suit.

Today, April 9, 2012, Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission Chair, Colleen Coyle Mathis announced that the Department of Justice has approved the congressional district map submitted by the Commission on February 9, 2012.  Chair Mathis thanked those members of the public that participated in the process to develop the congressional map.

Several Pinal County Sheriff candidates and hopefuls for Supervisor for District Two will be open to public questioning at a Town Hall Forum to be held tomorrow.  Clerk of the Superior Court, Chad A. Roche will be moderating the event by taking questions from the audience and fielding them to the candidates.

Mayor Scott Smith, Arizona Republican candidate for Governor, today received the endorsement of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, one of the most respected conservative leaders in the country on immigration and economic development. Governor Brewer's support gives Mayor Smith's campaign a huge boost of momentum going into the final weeks of the race.

John Fillmore (Apache Junction) and Rich Crandall (Mesa), who are facing each other for the Republican ballot slot for state senator, have confirmed they will appear at the Legislative District 16 Candidate Forum and Debate at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.

Cites health reasons for decision as voter fraud allegations surface

John Enright has withdrawn from the Republican primary race for Pinal County supervisor, citing health reasons, however, controversy is surrounding the Gold Canyon resident.

Legislative District 8 candidate Emily Verdugo was named as one of the top 20 Latino Democrats to watch in the next 20 years on Labor Day, September 3rd, by the Houston Chronicle.

The effort to recall Governor Jan Brewer kicked off today, Feb 11th, at Wesley Bolin Park at the State Capitol. Thousands of people were in Downtown Phoenix to celebrate the statehood centennial at Arizona Best Fest at the Capitol.

The group, led by community activist Leonard Clark, met at 10am to organize the volunteers. They passed out blank petitions to volunteers and as the crowds arrived at the Capitol, they began collecting signatures.

On Wednesday, May 30, 2012, Pinal County Sheriff candidate Kevin Taylor submitted his nominating petitions to the Pinal County Elections office.  Taylor, a Democrat, submitted more than 700 signatures that he collected across Pinal County.

Jack McClaren, Constable for Justice of the Peace District 7 (Apache Junction) resigned in May because he announced plans to seek other elected office.  The Pinal County Board of Supervisors accepted his resignation at its June 6 public meeting.

On Thursday the House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, which would increase spending and federal taxes. I voted against the bill.

For fiscal year 2010-2011, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu spent 54 percent more than the state average on individual officers in his department, according to a report obtained by the McClaren for Sheriff Committee.
