SRP Agrees to Purchase Energy from Arizona Biomass Plant



Renewable Energy is Generated from Wood-Burning Facility near Snowflake

Salt River Project has signed a one-year agreement to purchase up to 13 megawatts of energy generated from the Snowflake Power LLC., a biomass power plant located in the White Mountains of Navajo County in northern Arizona.

The Snowflake plant, owned and operated by Snowflake Holdings, LLC, a portfolio investment of the Najafi Companies, generates electricity through a wood-burning boiler using forest thinning (wood-waste material from the area’s forest industries) and waste recycled paper fibers from an existing newsprint paper mill located adjacent to the biomass facility.

SRP General Manager Richard Silverman to retire

Richard Silverman - SRPSRP General Manager Richard H. (Dick) Silverman announced plans at today's SRP Board of Directors meeting to retire in August 2011, marking his 45th anniversary with SRP.

Silverman, 70, said, "We have strong strategic and financial plans in place and a demonstrated record of customer satisfaction." SRP has been ranked by J.D. Power and Associates as the best utility in the West nine years in a row.

"The reservoirs are full and our work force is well prepared for the challenges ahead," Silverman said. "With a slow but sure economic recovery expected, I believe it's an appropriate time to start transitioning to a new management team."

SRP Donates $1.7 Million to Charitable Organizations

Employee Boosters’ Contributions to Assist Communities

Salt River Project and its employees have raised more than $1.7 million for charitable organizations in the Valley and throughout the state.

The SRP Employee Boosters Association, which allows employees to donate through a one-time payment or payroll deductions throughout the year, distributes funds to a number of nonprofit charitable organizations – including the United Way throughout the Valley, Pinal County, Page and St. Johns.

For the first time since 2012, Salt River Project on Wednesday delivered a record amount of energy to its Phoenix-area retail customers. Between 4 and 5 p.m., SRP delivered an estimated retail peak demand of 6,707 megawatts.

SRP Customers now Receiving Geothermal Energy from Utah

Salt River Project is now receiving renewable energy from the recently completed Cove Fort Geothermal Project in Beaver County, Utah. 

 In 2012, SRP signed a 20-year agreement with Massachusetts-based Enel Cove Fort, LLC to purchase the output of the 25-megawatt plant.  The geothermal power generated by the project will offset enough carbon dioxide emissions each year to equal removing 15,000 cars from the road.

SRP Board Approves Price Decrease for Customers

1.1Percent Reduction for SRP Customers Will Take Effect in May

The Salt River Project Board today approved a price decrease that will result in lowering customer bills by an overall average of 1.1% beginning in May.

The pricing plan reduces two components of SRP’s electric prices and will be in effect for the six summer billing months in 2013, saving a typical residential customer about $1.72 per month.

SRP Board Approves Increased Commitment to Sustainable Energy

SRPThe Salt River Project Board of Directors today voted to raise SRP’s sustainable portfolio goals and approve revisions to the Sustainable Portfolio Principles. The Sustainable Portfolio Principles, which were established in 2004 and revised in 2006, direct SRP’s acquisition and use of renewable-energy resources as well as efforts towards energy efficiency.

With today’s vote, the Board has set a goal to meet 20 percent of SRP’s retail electricity requirements through sustainable resources by the year 2020.

First Commercial Deployment of SunPower’s Concentrating Technology

Salt River Project (SRP) and SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) today are dedicating a one-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant at Arizona State University’s (ASU) Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Ariz. The facility is the first commercial deployment of the SunPower® C7 Tracker (C7 Tracker) technology, a solar photovoltaic tracking system that concentrates the sun’s power seven times to achieve one of the lowest levelized costs of electricity (LCOE) for solar power plants available today.
