Remarks by the President on the Shootings in Tucson, Arizona

President ObamaTHE PRESIDENT:  As many of you are aware, earlier today a number of people were shot in Tucson, Arizona, including several who were meeting at a supermarket with their congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords.  We are still assembling all the facts, but we know that Representative Giffords was one of the victims.  She is currently at a hospital in the area, and she is battling for her life.

We also know that at least five people lost their lives in this tragedy.  Among them were a federal judge, John Roll, who has served America’s legal system for almost 40 years; and a young girl who was barely nine years old.

Registering but Not Voting: Arizona Voters Send Mixed Message

*statistics from Secretary of State’s Office http://www.azsos.gov/election/PreviousYears.htm. Numbers calculated include both active and inactive voters. Inactive voters are defined per ARS §16-166 of voters to whom voting materials (except sample ballots) were mailed but returned as undelivered.

With National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, Sept. 23, O’Connor House is encouraged, but not satisfied with Arizona voter registration and turnout statistics. While there is a 3 percent increase in voter registration since July 2013, only 27.2 percent of eligible voters turned in a ballot for the Aug. 26 primary. This does not bode well for the coming Nov. 4th General Election if voters are unenthusiastic to cast their ballots.

There is a new breed of thieves roaming through the Valley, but their efforts could soon be regulated by a new Arizona bill, HB 2262.

Metal thieves are creating a criminal epidemic throughout the nation and now into Arizona, according to Republican Rep. Thomas Forese, who spoke on the bill in a press conference the morning of Feb. 6.

After two years of working with victims of metal theft, Mr. Forese put his foot forward in supporting the house bill on behalf of protecting future victims. The goal is to make scrap metal dealers register with the Arizona Department of Public Safety so thieves can be stopped before they go any further.

The members of Arizona’s Independent Redistricting Commission voted 4-1 Oct. 10 to adopt a draft legislative-district map, according to a press release.

The draft has been posted to azredistricting.org. It is the result of collaboration between commissioners Scott Freeman (R-Maricopa County) and Linda McNulty (D-Pima County), who merged their earlier, individual efforts into the 30 districts.

“ They both rose to the occasion in a huge way,” said Chairwoman Colleen Mathis (I-Pima County). “Now people have something they can evaluate,” Ms. Mathis added, pointing out that Arizonans will be able to tell the commissioners specifically what they like and dislike.
