Tax Crunch Time: Race to the April 18th Deadline

taxreturn-stv

As we rapidly approach the April 18th tax deadline, it seems like there's never been a better time to crack open a cold one, sit back, and have a hearty chuckle about the joys of filing individual income tax returns in Arizona. In a friendly reminder, the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) is urging taxpayers to submit and pay before the deadline.

For those of you who may have misplaced your calendars, the deadline is less than a week away on April 18th, 2023. This also marks the first-quarter deadline for the lucky folks who file individual estimated tax payments quarterly.

In the spirit of keeping things light, let's play a game of "Are you required to file an Arizona tax return?" If you're a full-year or part-year resident individual and meet any of the following criteria, congratulations – you're a winner!

  • Single or married filing separately with a gross income (GI) greater than $12,950;
  • Head of household with a GI greater than $19,400; or
  • Married and filing jointly with a GI greater than $25,900.

Non-resident individuals, don't worry – you're not left out. Your threshold numbers are prorated based on your Arizona gross income to federal adjusted gross income ratio.

ADOR would like to emphasize the importance of e-filing, which has proven to be faster, more secure, and even free for eligible taxpayers. So far, over 95% of individual tax returns have been e-filed this year. Paper return enthusiasts, beware – processing times can take 8-10 weeks, whereas e-filed returns only take an average of 2 weeks.

To avoid delays and ensure smooth sailing, ADOR has provided a list of tips – which we've cleverly dubbed "The Taxpayer's Guide to Happiness." Be sure to follow these steps to achieve tax nirvana:

  1. Submit all the same tax year forms together.
  2. Double-check and complete key fields like names, addresses, and tax ID numbers.
  3. Use fillable forms or e-file to calculate and verify information accurately.
  4. Include all necessary forms, totals, and supporting documents.
  5. Report income, withholding, and payments accurately.
  6. Triple-check your bank routing and account numbers – you are responsible for them!
  7. If you're using paper returns, print with black ink on white paper to minimize errors.
  8. Send payments to the correct ADOR P.O. Box and IRS address.
  9. Ensure your paper check includes all necessary information.
  10. Last but not least, remember to sign and date your return!
  11. If you find yourself running out of time, fear not – an extension is available by submitting Form 204. Just remember, an extension does not grant you more time to pay taxes owed, and the due date for an extension is still April 18th.
