ADOR Announces Start of 2024 Tax Season

The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) has officially opened the individual income tax filing season for the 2023 tax year today, marking the commencement of Arizona's 2024 electronic tax filing season. This year, ADOR introduces several enhancements aimed at improving the customer experience and facilitating the tax filing process.

Taxpayers have until Monday, April 15, 2024, to file their 2023 tax returns or request an extension. For those filing an extension, the final deadline to submit the tax return is October 15, 2024.

Significant changes for the 2023 tax year include the implementation of a flat individual income tax rate of 2.5% for all income levels and filing statuses. This change renders the Optional Tax Table and the X and Y Tax Table obsolete. ADOR has provided a detailed overview of all the changes for 2023 on their website.

This tax season, taxpayers have expanded options for filing their individual tax returns for free, including the Free File Alliance program and a forthcoming free Direct File option. The Arizona Free Alliance program offers free tax preparation software to eligible taxpayers, with multiple free file offerings available through the ADOR website.

ADOR emphasizes its commitment to processing income tax refunds swiftly. Taxpayers who file electronically and opt for direct deposit can expect their refund within a couple of weeks of return acceptance, while those filing paper returns should anticipate refunds within eight weeks. ADOR requests that taxpayers refrain from calling about their refunds before the 8-week processing period.

E-filing is encouraged for its benefits, including more secure processing, fewer errors, and quicker refunds. Last year, over 3.4 million individual income tax returns were filed electronically, with an average refund turnaround of nine days, compared to 64 days for paper filings.

Direct deposit is recommended for a fast and convenient refund. Taxpayers can include their banking information on their tax returns to receive refunds directly into their accounts.

To mitigate tax fraud and refund theft, ADOR employs rigorous fraud prevention measures. In fiscal year 2023, the department's Criminal Investigations Unit prevented over $30 million in fraudulent refunds. Taxpayers are encouraged to visit ADOR's website to learn about identity theft prevention.

Taxpayers should ensure accuracy in their returns by completing their federal returns first, using the correct tax year forms, verifying all information, and including necessary documentation. For paper filings, ADOR advises using fillable forms and printing with black ink on white paper.

Visit the ADOR website for a list of approved software providers for electronically filed returns and further information on tax filing and fraud prevention.
