Easy Ways to Lower Your Power Bill Before Summer Heat Hits

Temperatures are already starting to warm up across Arizona, and Salt River Project (SRP) says now is the time for residents to prepare their homes before the summer heat arrives.

For many San Tan Valley residents who receive electricity from SRP, getting ready early can help keep homes cooler and reduce energy bills during the hottest months of the year.

SRP recently shared several free and low-cost tips to help customers improve energy efficiency before temperatures climb higher.

One of the first steps residents can take is scheduling a Home Energy Assessment. This program helps identify areas where a home may be losing energy and offers suggestions for improvements.

SRP customers can complete a free online assessment, or schedule an in-person assessment for $45. The in-person option is free for income-qualified customers. People who complete an assessment also receive an energy savings kit valued at about $250, which includes items that help improve home efficiency.

Another simple step is checking and replacing air filters. Dirty filters make air conditioners work harder, which can increase electricity use and shorten the life of the system. SRP recommends checking filters monthly and replacing them when needed.

Residents can also seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and ducts. Even small openings can let cool air escape and hot air enter the home. Weatherstripping and other sealing materials can help keep cool air inside during the summer.

SRP also offers a program called Bring Your Own Thermostat (BYOT) for customers who have smart thermostats. Through this program, SRP can make small, temporary temperature adjustments during times when electricity demand is very high.

Customers who enroll can receive a $50 bill credit for each qualifying thermostat, plus an additional $25 credit each year they stay in the program. Some customers may also qualify for a free smart thermostat through the SRP Marketplace.

Another helpful option is installing shade screens or using window coverings. Direct sunlight through windows can cause up to 50 percent of the heat that enters a home. Shade screens or window film can reduce that heat and help keep indoor temperatures lower.

SRP customers may qualify for a rebate of $1 per square foot for professionally installed shade screens or window film.

Lighting can also affect energy use. SRP says lighting makes up about 10 percent of a home's electricity use. Switching from older incandescent bulbs to LED lights can help homeowners save about $75 per year on average.

Residents who complete a Home Energy Assessment will receive 25 LED light bulbs in their energy savings kit.

Finally, SRP encourages customers to review their electricity price plan. The company offers several options, including time-of-day plans with lower prices during certain hours, flat rate plans, and prepaid electricity plans.

Choosing the right plan can help households better manage their energy costs during the summer.

With temperatures expected to keep rising in the coming months, SRP says taking small steps now can help San Tan Valley residents stay comfortable while keeping energy costs under control when summer arrives.
