Arizona Legislature Passes Stolen Valor Act to Protect Integrity of Military Service

The Arizona Legislature has passed SB1424, the Stolen Valor Act, marking a significant step forward in the state's efforts to protect the honor and integrity of military service. The bill, now awaiting the Governor's signature, makes it a state crime to fraudulently claim military service or honors for personal gain.

The legislation was championed in the House by Representative Walt Blackman, a U.S. Army combat veteran and Chairman of the House Government Committee. Under the new law, it will be a criminal offense to knowingly lie about military status or awards in order to access jobs, government benefits, or privileges specifically intended for veterans.

"The Stolen Valor Act is about protecting the integrity of service, sacrifice, and the sacred bond between our state and those who've worn the uniform," said Rep. Blackman. "Today, Arizona draws a clear line: if you falsely claim the honor of military service, there will be consequences."

SB1424 responds to increasing reports of individuals impersonating veterans—wearing unearned medals or misusing veteran status to receive financial or professional advantages. The bill strengthens Arizona's ability to prosecute these offenses at the state level, building on existing federal statutes and closing enforcement gaps.

Representative Blackman expressed his deep gratitude to the veteran advocates, legislative allies, and community supporters who helped push the legislation forward.

"This victory belongs to every service member and military family who has earned their place with honor," he said.

Once signed into law, the Stolen Valor Act will empower local and state prosecutors to take action against those who exploit the respect and benefits reserved for Arizona's true military heroes.
