It's time to "stick your neck out" and help find a name for the Phoenix Zoo's baby Masai giraffe.

The female baby was born June 26.

In honor of her mother, Imara (meaning “strength” in Swahili), zookeepers came up with six Swahili-themed possible names.

And now it's up to the public to vote for a favorite!

All voting details can be found online.

Voting will end Sunday, July 29 at midnight and the name will be announced the week of July 30.

Imara and the baby will remain in the giraffe barn until the calf is old enough to be introduced to other animals and go out on the Savanna.

Imara is a seven-year-old Masai giraffe and arrived at the Zoo in 2012 as recommended by the Masai Giraffe Species Survival Plan to breed with our nine-year-old male Masai giraffe, Miguu (pronounced Mee-goo). Miguu came to Phoenix in 2010 from the Los Angeles Zoo.

This is the Zoo’s second giraffe birth in the past year.

Siku, a female Masai giraffe, was born last September to mom, Sunshine.

Don't forget to cast your vote online.

The six choices for the new baby's name are:

  • Asili (Swahili for nature)
  • Jasiri (Swahili for brave)
  • Kivuli (Swahili for shadow)
  • Mwishowe (Swahili for finally/eventually)
  • Nyusi (Swahili for eyebrows)
  • Subira (Swahili for patience)
