Sharp tuition increases for new students have pushed the three state universities above the national average for in-state tuition and fees for the first time in at least 25 years, according to a survey being released today.
Arizona, in annual surveys by the non-profit College Board, has traditionally been below the national average for tuition and mandatory fees for public, four-year institutions, sometimes by as much as $1,500. The national average for tuition and fees is $7,605 this school year, an increase of $555, or nearly 8 percent, over last year, according to the College Board's report. When room and board are added in, the average price tag climbs to about $16,000 a year.
