Powerful thunderstorms began striking the Valley on Monday afternoon, bringing strong, dusty winds, periods of heavy rain and a possibility of hail, according to the National Weather Service.
The storms forced about 30 flights to be diverted from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to other cities across the Southwest, such as El Paso, Albuquerque and Tucson.
Flights at Sky Harbor are experiencing some delays that are lasting between 15 to 30 minutes, according to Deborah Ostreicher, the airport's deputy aviation director.
The storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning that lasted until 3:45 p.m. for parts of Pinal County and Maricopa County, including Ahwatukee, Tempe, Sun Lakes and Mesa.
Winds could reach 60 mph.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
