SAN TAN Park July events

by: Queen Creek/San Tan Valley Independent

Consisting of more than 10,000 acres, San Tan Valley Regional Park, 6533 W. Phillips Road in Queen Creek, is a fine example of the lower Sonoran Desert.

The park ranges in elevation from about 1,400 feet to more than 2,500 feet.

Goldmine Mountain is in the northern area, with a San Tan Mountain escarpment in the southern portion of the park.

The vegetation changes from creosote flats to dense saguaro forest. Various types of wildlife may be observed, including reptiles, birds, and mammals.

San Tan Mountain Regional Park also has a Visitor’s Center with educational tidbits and souvenir items to purchase. Visit with park staff and see the wildlife exhibits or tortoise habitat. Restroom facilities are available and additional amenities are slated for future development. Go to http://maricopa.gov/parks/santan or call 480-655-5554 ext.201.

Upcoming events include:

  • Get as close as you can (safely) to snakes, scorpions, spiders, lizards, and tortoises 8-10 a.m. July 7 with Ranger Adam. This will be an open house style program where guests are welcome to come and go as they please, ask questions, take photos and even touch a reptile. Cost is $6 vehicle park entry fee.
  • “Monsoon Mayhem” Family Fun Water Day, 10-11 a.m. July 7. Looking for a cool way to cool off? Enjoy a refreshing assortment of water activities at the park, while learning about some of the special animals of the desert. Don’t forget to bring a towel and water shoes, because you will get soaked. Sunscreen and appropriate sun attire is encouraged. Cost is $6 vehicle park entry fee. This program is part of the “County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this summer” series and there will be a raffle for a family-four pack at the end of the program.
