6 a.m.-3 p.m. are summer hours; shaded trails offered

The Boyce Thompson Arboretum, an Arizona State Park, is open every day of May, June, July and August from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Final admissions are taken at 2 p.m. so those last visitors have one full hour to enjoy the gardens.

Even thought it is summer, there are still activities and events on the BTA calendar.

If you've been looking for a chance to expand your artistic expression, Sunday, June 3, brings a chance to learn to burn, paint, etch and emboss decorative gourds when Mesa artists Gerald and Vicki Johnson offer their next workshop at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Class registration of $39 includes a gourd and full morning of coaching and artistic inspiration from 9am-2pm. Tools, paints and paintbrushes are provided during the workshop as well.

To sign up, have a credit card ready and call (520)689-2723.

Enrollment includes daily admission; arrive early and walk the 1.5 mile main trail through the gardens. Dogs on leashes are welcome as well.

BTA opens at 6 a.m. during the summer months.

Coming events and classes include a Dragonfly Walk on Saturday, June 2 with Roger Racut, and Michael Madsen Camera Basics on June 9 (and there's a 'Learn Your Lizards' walk that morning, too).
