There has been a bus accident at Quail Run and Bella Vista involving bus route #3 from Magma Ranch K-8.

The elderly female driver of the SUV involved in the accident, had to be extricated and is in serious condition at a Scottsdale hospital.  The accident happened around 4:10pm this afternoon.  The bus was carrying 42 4th, 5th and 6th grade students from Magma Ranch K-8 school and the school bus driver.

A dozen Combs HS students suspended

Last year, which was Combs High School's first graduating class, the "Senior Prank" was to tag the school with spray paint. This year, they started a food fight in the cafeteria.

Last year there were no consequences, this year 12 students involved in the food fight were suspended and some are banned from their graduation ceremony.

Registration begins Tuesday, May 28 for the Summer Reading Program.  Families and their caregivers are strongly encouraged to come into the Florence Community Library and register their children and teens.  This year’s themes are “Dig Into Reading” for children and early literacy and “Beneath the Surface” for teens.  The library will offer Reading Club along with weekly activities, a raffle, treasure hunt, snacks, and fun incentives!

Explosion in San Tan Valley

Earlier this afternoon, a white pickup truck traveling on Ocotillo, west of Ironwood near Meridian, crossed the center line and collided with a Sysco semi-truck, according to Rural Metro spokesperson, Colin Williams.

On impact, the semi exploded and sent pillars of black smoke into the air.  Miraculously, there were no injuries.  Air evac was on standby but was not needed.

According to some residents in the San Tan Heights community of San Tan Valley, this past Sunday the "stench of sewer" was stronger than normal. By Monday afternoon it was clear to see why. Raw sewage had spilled into two of the three lakes in that community and people passing by could see the raw sewage floating on the top of the lake.

Johnson Utilities did have trucks on site Monday and Tuesday draining the lakes. By Tuesday afternoon, both lakes were completely drained.

 

Williams Baptist College awarded degrees to 111 graduates during its 2013 baccalaureate and commencement exercises Saturday, May 4.

A crowd of over 1,000 filled WBC’s Southerland-Mabee Center for the ceremony. Dr. Gary Hollingsworth, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock, Ark., was honored as the 2013 Distinguished Baptist Minister, and he then delivered the address to graduates.

On Thursday, May 9, Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles received the honor of speaking at the 2013 Pinal County Fallen Officer Dedication Ceremony, remembering the lives of the brave men and women in uniform killed in the line of duty and recognizing the families of those individuals.

Serving as the Pinal County Attorney and working directly with federal and state officials, Sheriff Babeu and his deputies, local police chiefs and their officers, Voyles knows the hard work and dedication the trained men and women in law enforcement encounter on a daily basis.  At the Ceremony, he shared instances where the dedication of law enforcement positively impacted lives and signified their willingness to sacrifice for the betterment and safety of those in our community.

The first Catholic Parish in San Tan area, St. Michael the Archangel, will hold its Ground Breaking Ceremony on Saturday, May 4th at 1:00 pm.  The ground breaking will be for the first phase of the complex-- the Parish Hall, which will be used as a church until the congregation is ready to build.  Today, the congregation celebrates Mass at Copper Basin K-8 School but is rapidly outgrowing that space and is looking forward to welcoming its own building.

Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas will be present to conduct the ceremony.  Eventually, the new church will be the largest church building in the Diocese of Tucson, with a planned 2000 seating capacity.  The Tucson Diocese shares a border with the Phoenix Diocese along the Pinal / Maricopa County line, just east of the Town of Queen Creek.  It is in the oldest diocese in the State of Arizona and includes active parishes that are nearly 300 years old. 

A local organization passed out free home drug test kits in San Tan Valley the day before many people celebrat­ed drug use.

Debbie Moak is the founder of Arizona­ based notMYkid.org, a nonprofit that fo­cuses on preventing the devastation of teen addiction. The association held a parent awareness and prevention campaign on the dangers of the 420 culture. Ms. Moak said April 20 is known as “National Get High Day.”

“Many kids try drugs for their first time on 420,” Ms. Moak said in a phone inter­view with the Independent. “ We’re talking about minor kids and all drugs. Many par­ents are unaware of what 420 is. We want parents to be aware.”
