Upon striking the Wycoff family Daniel Carrube attempted to flee the scene at a high rate of speed entering the common areas in front of the Walgreens pharmacy plowing down several bushes and signs. Daniel entered onto Gantzel traveling southbound in the Northbound lanes. Daniel jumped the curb into the center median and began driving south where he re entered Gantzel once again traveling south in the Northbound traffic lanes. Mr. Carrube crossed three lanes of travel striking the curb at the entrance to McDonald's where he continued to drive south down the sidewalk into another common area where he ultimately struck a concrete jersey barrier protecting the high powered electrical lines supplying power to many of the homes in the area.
Several people came to Daniels aid attempting to render life saving efforts, however their efforts were unsuccessful. Emergency medical services arrived on scene where Daniel was pronounced deceased at 1934 hours by medical staff at Banner Ironwood. Adam region and the Pinal County DUI task force was briefing when the collision was dispatched where we responded and performed a hard closure at the intersection of Ironwood & Ocotillo and 1/2 miles north and south due to the severity of the collision. Based on our initial investigation alcohol and speed were the primary factors involving this collision.
It should be noted, while investigating the scene, a second motorists drove through police tape, over detour cones and through the accident scene.
The driver was pursued and subsequesntly arrested for a DUI of .142. I will have more info on that separate incident as it is made available.
The Pinal Regional DUI Task Force will be in full force tonight through Sunday.
PCSO Comment: This is one of the largest accident scenes PCSO has been involved with in recent memory. They had to record 433 points to record on scene spanning for a substantial distance.
