Coolidge Unified School District is requesting a 10 percent Maintenance and Operations budget increase that would increase taxes for property owners within the district and increase available funds for the 2013-2014 school year, officials said.

The 8 percent override that was approved in 2004 expired June 30.

CUSD Superintendent Cecilia Johnson said the requested override percentage was upped from 8 percent to 10 percent because of inflation and higher costs the school district is facing.

At Coolidge Unified School District’s June 13th regular Governing Board meeting, the Governing Board was asked to vote on whether to adopt a resolution that would call for a special override election for the school district.

Superintendent Johnson and the District’s Director of Business Services, Shalee Ziegler, presented the Governing Board with information and a recommendation from a district and community exploratory committee and data from a recent survey taken of both the Coolidge and San Tan Valley communities.

Superintendent Cecilia Johnson signed letters of intent to play football in college on a day dubbed National Signing Day.

It didn’t take four San Tan Foothills seniors long to decide where to continue their academic and athletic careers. On the first signing day Feb. 1, three of the four chose a place close to home and a fourth chose to move on to a different area to continue playing football. All signed letters of intent.

Mychael Bruce, arguably the best athlete in the senior class, will attend Valley City State College in North Dakota. Julian Navarette, Tyler Howes and James Leep will all attend Scottsdale Community College.
