by: Lynn Hurley

PINAL COUNTY, AZ  (09/22/2011) –  Over 20 attendees representing 15 Counties statewide converged in Pinal County for the September meeting of the Arizona Association of Superior Court Clerks. This elite body of elected officials met for an all day conference to address a full agenda.

In attendance were Sue Hall, President of the Association and Clerk of the Superior Court (COSC) Apache County; Virlynn Tinnell, COSC Mohave County; Michael Jeanes, COSC Maricopa County; Sandra K. Markham, COSC Yavapai County; Pam Pollock, COSC  Greenlee County; Anita Escobedo, Vice President of the Association and COSC Gila County; Chad Roche, COSC Pinal County; Juan Pablo Guzman, COSC Santa Cruz County; Mary Ellen Dunlap, COSC Cochise County; Deanne Romo, COSC Navajo County; Patricia Noland, COSC Pima County and Valerie Wyant, Chief Deputy for Debbie Young, COSC Coconino County; Darlee Maylen, COSC Graham County; Sheri Newman, COSC LaPaz County, and Lynn Fazz, COSC Yuma County.

Several topics including Maintaining Electronic Administrative Records; legislative updates regarding SB1081, SB1465, and HB2302 were discussed. These summits allow the Clerks to discuss process improvements  that, in the aggregate, can save Arizona taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. The sharing of information among the Superior Court Clerks facilitates standardization of practices, which translates into workplace efficiency. With a keen eye on the current economic situation, the Clerks addressed the subject of fees and fee deferrals.

According to Arizona Association of Superior Court Clerks President Sue Hall, “The Clerks are committed to innovation and change. We realize that the future of the courts depends on the adoption of current technology. A reliable, paperless system is the only way to truly deal with the needs of the public.” Clerk Hall expressed that the Association as a whole is challenged by the current budgetary constraints. “Budgets are tighter than ever,” she continued, “and that means we must find ways to be creative and to do more – with less – but we are up for the challenge.”

Clerk of the Superior Court Chad A. Roche was pleased to host the meeting in Pinal County. “We’re the largest of the mid-sized courts – and the explosive growth in Pinal County calls for responsiveness on a scale not seen before.  This is the time to analyze each process and make it as lean and efficient as possible,” Roche stated.

The Office of the Clerk of the Superior Court is committed to providing quality customer service, ensuring the integrity and access to court records by supporting the Judicial process through efficient Records Management, Financial Administration and Jury Service.
