The January 11, 2012 Florence USD Governing Board Meeting was hosted by Florence K-8 at the Florence District Office auditorium.

Elizabeth Ridout, Director of Assessment and Accountability reported that the percentage of FUSD juniors and seniors who passed AIMS this past fall went up for the second year in a row, topping the state’s percentages.

The District has emphasized the use of data to identify gaps in student learning and to design intervention strategies to help students master the missing skills. Educational technology such as ALEKS (math) and FastForward (reading) provide targeted practice and assessment to help hone students’ learning and comprehension.

Dr. Gary Nine congratulated the technology staff on a job well done; FUSD delivered a presentation at the Arizona School Boards Association annual conference via ITV about the use of ITV in the classroom. Dr. Nine stated that the connection was so clear that many people in the audience thought they were watching a video, and were visibly startled when the presenters (broadcasting from Florence) started interacting with the facilitators in the auditorium in Phoenix. The District has had great success with beginning Spanish classes offered via ITV as an elective for middle school students in the seven Districtwide K-8 schools, and Agriscience in the two high schools. With the spring semester, the District has also started delivering some math classes via ITV. “It is hard to find good math teachers,” stated Dr. Nine, “and ITV gives us the ability to expand the reach of our truly exceptional math teachers so that all of our students can achieve more.” Classes taught via ITV also have teacher’s aides to monitor and assist students.
