CAC choral program seeks talent

by: Tom DiCamillo

The Central Arizona College choral program is ready to begin another great semester and is accepting new members.

Current students, as well as members of the community who enjoy singing, are invited to choose from three different choirs to enhance their vocal chords and share their talents.

The two different College Choirs will meet Mondays from 7-9:30 p.m., CRN 11835, or Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-2:45 p.m., CRN 11834.

“Being a member of a choral group is a great way for a person who enjoys singing to have an opportunity to both use and improve their skills,” Dr. Kim Osteen-Petreshock, who directs the choral music at CAC, explained. “It's also a great way to meet other people who enjoy making music.”

There is no audition to register for the course, however applicants will be asked to sing for Dr. Osteen-Petreshock at the beginning of the semester to determine placement.

The CAC Jazz Choir will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-1:15 p.m. A short audition is required for acceptance into the Jazz Choir; arrangements can be made by contacting Dr. Osteen-Petreshock through email.

“It is not necessary to prepare any music for the Jazz Choir audition,” Osteen-Petreshock said. “The best thing to do would be to start singing regularly and doing any warm-up exercises that you might know so that your voice is warmed up and ready to go.”

Auditions are by appointment for the CAC Jazz Choir and are currently underway. They will continue through the first week of classes.

Although Choir is considered a college course, the activities will be different than other classes.

“Homework will consist of practicing one's music outside of class; choir does not generally include written assignments,” Osteen-Petreshock said. “Regular attendance, participation in all performances, and a high level of effort are expected.”

All classes will be held at the Signal Peak Campus in room S129.

“All choirs participate in two major concerts per semester - one around the middle of the semester and one at the end,” she said. “The performances are usually on campus. All relevant dates and times will be made available at the beginning of the semester.”

Choir classes begin on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, so participants are encourage to register as soon as possible.
