With constant contempt and debates running rampant it seems as though it’s every man/woman for themselves. The goodness in others, it seems is so hard to come by. We witness hardships, homelessness, poverty, hoarding and HUNGER in every direction, wanting to close our eyes thinking that maybe it will go away.
Even right here in District 2 (Yes, it’s a real district in the books) I have become privy to all that I speak of. The characters are real people fighting for their beliefs, against the “capital.” We the People struggle daily in an attempt to uplift the less fortunate ones, all the while possibly putting our own selves and families in jeopardy. Thankfully, we are battling with our strong minds and voices; not bows & arrows, guns, knives or any type of disastrous, natural forces. The horror to think that life could very well be played out just like The Hunger Games is frightening, discouraging and borderline Armageddon-like.
While “The Fortunates” are living and loving the dream, it makes me ponder this: If they take a break and reap from the bountiful benefits they’ve earned will they suffer consequences? Or, are they entitled? And, while “The Unfortunates” are just scraping by, pulling their shades at dusk and locking their doors, do they feel grateful for another day survived?
Just like the books, this particular life has created such a phenomenon. Kids of all ages are so anxious to get their hands on them. Let’s all just hope that they can distinguish the fiction vs. non-fiction concepts, morals and life lessons. On a personal level, after getting sucked into the abyss of this trilogy I realized, analyzed and over-analyzed the depth and sad truths found within. Why can’t we all just get along? Why does such bitter, shallow hatred and envy exist amongst us? Why do some people feel as though they are owned by “The Elite", in turn forcing other people to feel less than, and powerless?
In closing, I believe I have depleted my thoughts and fulfilled my objective. I pray that no one ever has to suffer such Hunger. As a united, newly formed “capital”, please know that District 2 is here to help you, not own you. And this, my friends, is no game.
